CANFIELD The Hot Rod Super Nationals draws crowd topping 51,000

The sheriff's department had no accident calls at this year's event.
CANFIELD -- Troopers from the state highway patrol's Canfield post issued 156 citations to Boardman motorists in the hours after the weekend's Hot Rod Super Nationals.
A highway patrol dispatcher said 56 of the citations were for seat belt violations. A statewide drive to encourage motorists to wear seat belts was held last week.
The dispatcher also said state troopers made four arrests for driving under the influence and responded to five auto accidents on state Route 224 after the Super Nationals, which ended Sunday at the Canfield Fairgrounds.
Many motorists left the event around 10 p.m. each night to cruise U.S. Route 224 in Boardman. Mahoning County Sheriff's Maj. Michael Budd said that in the past, the cruising resulted in several accidents and reports of squealing tires.
This year, the sheriff's department prohibited left turns along much of Route 224 and set up a crosswalk at the intersection of West Boulevard to try to prevent accidents, Budd said. He noted that the department did not respond to any accidents this year.
Sheriff's deputies issued four citations during the event for open container violations. Boardman and Canfield police will have information about the number of citations they issued later today.
The popular event attracted 51,353 visitors and brought in millions of dollars to the Mahoning Valley.
