Media center named for former principal
NILES -- The middle school under construction will be known as Niles Middle School, the board of education has decided.
The board met in special session Sunday to also name the school's technical media center after Louie B. Tabor Sr., a former district principal.
The $14.5 million building is scheduled to open May 2003 at 411 Brown St.
Schools Superintendent Patrick Guliano said Tabor, 81, was employed at the district for more than 40 years, serving as principal at Lincoln, Jackson and Garfield elementary schools.
5th Ward meeting
WARREN -- Councilman Brendan J. Keating, D-5th, will conduct a ward meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Devon Elementary School.
He will update city issues and address concerns.

Talk on Afghanistan
WARREN -- Charles Norchi, a John F. Kennedy High School graduate and expert on Afghanistan, will speak at the high school at 8 p.m. Saturday. The talk is free and open to the public.
Children's camps
HOWLAND -- The township will have children's camps for wrestling, drawing and basketball during the week of June 17.
Each program meets from 9 a.m. to noon in a Howland schools building and is open to children ages 6 to 13.
Registration forms are available at the township administrative building. The fee is $15 for Howland residents, $30 for nonresidents.
$101,500 fire
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fire of suspicious origin destroyed a garage and two vehicles early Sunday, according to the Youngstown Fire Department officials, who set the loss at $101,500.
A private security company notified authorities that a motion detector had been activated at 3105 Regis Ave. Flames were breaking through the roof of the garage at that address when firefighters arrived at 12:23 a.m.
The garage contained two vehicles: a 1968 Camaro and a Cavalier modified for drag racing. It was not immediately clear who owned the building or the cars.
Fire officials said they were told the resident died recently and the owner of the vehicles may be in prison.
Saturday closing
LORDSTOWN -- The Lordstown branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library will be closed Saturdays from Saturday through Labor Day weekend.
The library will resume Saturday hours Sept. 7.
FBI probes bank video
COLUMBIANA -- The FBI of Youngstown is studying surveillance video of the National City Bank state Route 164 branch here, Columbiana Police Chief John Krawchyk said.
A male robber took an undisclosed amount of cash from the bank Friday afternoon. Police said the robber fled on state Route 46 in a small blue-green car with Pennsylvania registration.
Dog shot on porch
YOUNGSTOWN -- An Ellenwood Avenue man returned home shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday to find his dog on the front porch had been shot in the right shoulder.
The owner told police he would take the dog to an animal hospital for treatment.
