High-achieving youth need to be recognized
EDITOR:
I had the opportunity to attend this morning's senior recognition and awards breakfast at Poland Seminary High School. I was there to present two graduating seniors with SBC Ameritech scholarships. But my purpose in writing is not from a professional perspective, but rather from a personal perspective.
I want to encourage The Vindicator to increase its coverage of "good news" involving our Mahoning Valley youth. Watching and hearing about all the graduating seniors at Poland, I was in awe of the quality of young adults that the school is producing.
But Poland is not unique. My son graduated from Canfield High School in 2000, and I saw first hand the strong character, compassion and citizenship that those graduating seniors had.
These traits are also very much present in Youngstown City Schools. Recently the Youngstown Rotary awarded scholarships to students graduating from Youngstown city high schools. Again, it was amazing to hear about all the academic accomplishments that those graduating seniors had achieved.
In today's society with the challenges and distractions caused by potential drug and alcohol abuse, crime and pre-marital sex, it's important that we make the extra effort to publicly recognize our youth that resist those temptations and do well academically, give back to their community and help make this Valley a better place to live. After all, our long term future depends upon our youth of today. I, for one, am glad for that.

Bishops continue bias against Catholic women
EDITOR:
The Catholic bishops will have a meeting very soon. They will talk about justice.
Women will not be there. They are not welcome.
The bishops accept women's work. They accept women's monetary contributions. But they do not accept women's opinions.
The bishops are saying loud and clear that women's opinions are worthless.
This is not fair.
This is insulting and unconscionable.

Neglected children most likely to get into trouble
EDITOR:
The crimes committed in Youngstown are done by those who have been neglected and never disciplined as children.
Children are allowed to roam the streets without any parental supervision.
I have lived in the inner city for more than seven years and have seen tiny children in Pampers roaming the streets with no adult in sight.
The scripture tells us that children left to themselves will be a disgrace to their parents and also influence other children to do evil.
The agencies responsible for dealing with abuse of children should patrol the inner city and deal with this neglect of those who are weak and defenseless.
The worst abuse of children is when they are ignored by the very individuals who are responsible to love and discipline.
God sees all the evil people do to children and holds parents responsible for bringing their children up to be God-fearing responsible citizens.
Jesus said those who hurt children in any way will be judged severely. Woe unto those who abuse and molest children.
