Arson suspected
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fire of suspicious origin destroyed a garage and two vehicles with a total value of $101,500 early Sunday, according to the Youngstown Fire Department.
A private security company notified authorities that a motion detector had been activated at the home at 3105 Regis Ave. Flames were breaking through the roof of the garage at that address when firefighters arrived at 12:23 a.m.
The garage contained two vehicles: a 1968 Camaro and a Cavalier modified for drag racing. It was not immediately clear who owned the house or the cars.
Fire officials said they were told the resident died recently and the owner of the vehicles may be in prison.
Found in stolen car
YOUNGSTOWN -- An 18-year-old man was charged with receiving stolen property after police found him sleeping around 1:20 a.m. today in a car stolen May 27 in Columbus.
The resident of Westlake Terrace Apartments was in a 1984 Pontiac parked in a rear lot in the 800 block of Ford Avenue.
Police said they found a revolver on the car seat and a small amount of marijuana in the man's pants. The man was also charged with improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and drug possession.
Dog shot on porch
YOUNGSTOWN -- An Ellenwood Avenue man returned home shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday to find his dog on the front porch had been shot in the right shoulder.
The owner told police he would take the dog to an animal hospital for treatment.
11 stitches for wound
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 29-year-old woman suffered a deep cut to the left side of her head after being hit with a 2-by-4 board by a friend's boyfriend, city police reports show. The woman said she visited her friend's West Dewey Avenue home around 11 a.m. Friday.
The woman, with a bloody bandage on her head, made the report to police around 3:10 p.m. that day. She told police she had gotten 11 stitches in her head.
Indecent exposure
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police were called to Zion Christian School, 3300 Canfield Road, for a report of a man exposing himself in a wooded area near a playground where children played behind the school.
School employees told police the man, under 30, wore only a T-shirt and touched himself around 10:10 a.m. Friday. He continued the act after being seen. Employees took the children into the school and the man fled.
Man flees from police
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man ran from police carrying a handgun after being stopped for playing loud music in his car on Erie Street at Pasadena Avenue, police reports show.
The man, 29, of West Ravenwood Avenue, was asked by officers to step out of his car shortly after 12:30 a.m. Saturday. He got out, pushed an officer and ran, pulling out the handgun.
Police said they found criminal tools in the car's trunk, including flex-cuffs, a ski mask, a screwdriver, duct tape, rubber gloves and two-way radios.
Bicyclist hit by vehicle
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are still investigating a hit-and-run traffic accident in which a 7-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle while riding her bicycle on Timberidge Road around 11:43 a.m. Sunday.
The victim, whose name has not been released by authorities, was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police say they have no suspects.
