MERCER, Pa. -- Mercer County will get a $300,000 Pennsylvania grant for a recycling education program. State Sen. Robert Robbins of Greenville, R-50th, who announced the award, said the money will be used for an education program that includes television, print and radio advertising as well as various promotional items such as brochures and key chains. The money comes from the Department of Environmental Protection.
Meeting to focuson sewer project
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Residents of the North Hill area are encouraged to attend a meeting about sewer work that will start this summer in that area. Mayor Timothy Fulkerson said the city is replacing sewage lines along Hillcrest and Boyles avenues and portions of Mercer Street. During the work there may be traffic delays or residents may not be able to use their water. Workers may have to enter some homes to make sure the work is completed, he said. The city engineer and contractor will be at the meeting to answer questions about the project. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Thursday in council chambers.
Chaplain hits the roof
BROOKFIELD -- Brookfield police chaplain Dan Cesene will be "jailed" for 72 hours on the roof of the township administration building beginning at 8 a.m. June 13.
The Rev. Cesene, pastor of Faith Assembly of God, is attempting to raise $10,000 for community outreach to Mexico and Africa.
He will remain in a temporary cell on the roof until 8 a.m. June 16, or until the goal is reached.
He'll eat only bread and water delivered by township safety services.
The money is to pay for his outreach to Mexico and Africa, where he will work with other clergy and government officials to assist them in helping the disadvantaged.

Birth in hotel?
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- Shenango Township Police are investigating whether a woman gave birth in a local hotel after finding what they believe is a placenta.
The substance was discovered sometime Saturday, but few details are being released, including the name of the hotel.
Cleanup closes road
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- One lane of Pa. Route 358 here was closed while firefighters cleaned up antifreeze spilled by a logging truck around 6:15 p.m. Saturday, according to police. There were no injuries, and the spill posed no health risk, officials said. The section of road, West Main Street at Second Street, was reopened by 8:30 p.m.
