GOLFING BENEFIT Cancer Society plans women's outing



Winning teams will be eligible to enter the state tournament.
VIENNA -- The Mahoning Valley American Cancer Society will hold a Tri-County Women's Golf Tournament on July 8 at Squaw Creek Country Club.
Honorees for this year's event are Cathy Carnifax of Trumbull County and Lucy Kelly of Mahoning County.
Registration and a continental breakfast will begin at 8 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 9 and an awards luncheon at 2 p.m.
In addition to 18 holes of golf, there will be door prizes and contests for closest to the pin and longest putt. There also are two hole-in-one contests.

Participants will be able to choose from four flight indexes for the four-player scramble event. Flight One is for women with an index of 0-12.6; Flight Two, 12.7-21.9; Flight Three, 22 and up; and Flight Four is for those with no index.
First-place teams in the first three flights may advance to the state championship to be held Sept. 14 and 15 at Firestone Country Club in Akron. State winners will advance to the national championship Oct. 25 and 26 in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Cost for play is $95 per person, and proceeds will be used for cancer research in Ohio and throughout the United States, and also used for education and community programs and quality-of-life programs for cancer patients and their families in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.
Individual golf-ball memorial signs may be purchased for $5 each in honor of cancer victims. The name of the person will be on the sign and displayed on the golf course.
