ELYRIA -- Windham High sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring six runs, and pitcher James Lade tossed a two-hit shutout as the Bombers beat Maplewood 10-0 in Saturday's Division IV regional final at George Day Field.
The Rockets (14-13) had won four straight tournament games and advanced to the regional for the first time in a decade. So Maplewood coach Mark Treveline wasn't despondent after losing to Windham, which is in the state tournament for the second consecutive season.
"We knew we needed an outstanding effort for us to win," Treveline said. "We had to keep it close and not allow much scoring, but we became a little unraveled."
Big inning
Windham's DavidJohn McClurg was hit by a pitch to start the second inning. With one out, Bill Burns singled into left-center and an off-target throw from the outfield scored McClurg and sent Burns to third.
Tony Marstiller then drilled a 2-1 fastball 365 feet over the left-field fence for a 3-0 lead. A walk to Drew Apthorpe, a double by James Lade, a long sacrifice fly by Cedric Turner, another hit batsman, an infield hit and a throwing error scored three more runs.
That was more than enough for Lade (5-1), a 5-foot-6, 145-pound junior right-hander. He allowed only two hits, one of which was an infield single in the first inning, while striking out five.
"I found what I needed on the mound today and it worked as I had great command of my curve," said Lade who went 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
Windham seniors Cedric Turner and Zack Burns each had a pair of RBIs.
