NATION
Hanna Storm book looks at female athletics
Hannah Storm, the nation's top female sportscaster, has just written a new book called "Go Girl! Raising Healthy, Confident and Successful Girls through Sports," which gives parents a guide from birth through the teen years, to getting their daughters involved in sports and keeping them involved. Experts report girls are six times as likely to drop out of sports than boys by age 12. Topics addressed in the book include:
USportsmanship: Think girls are naturally good sports? Think again. A parent's effort and guidance in helping their daughter become a good sport is now crucial in a society where an & quot;in your face & quot; attitude toward winning, losing and challenging calls has become part of the game. Hannah created a Good Sport Checklist for guidance.
UCoaching Abuse: Coaching abuse is prevalent and can take many forms. 45 percent of kids report being yelled at or insulted while participating in sports. Hannah provides ways to evaluate your daughter's coach.
UWeight management: For overweight girls, stopping the weight gain so she can grow into her body is the objective, not weight loss. A combination of exercise, diet, and behavior modification is key to teaching good habits that last a lifetime.
UInjuries: Millions of kids are treated every year for sports injuries. How many hours can children train? How hard? Hannah explains it all with advice from the experts.
The book's subject is especially timely as this year marks the 30th anniversary of Title IX, which opened the door to female participation in athletics in publicly funded schools.
