Davies defeatsdefending champ
RAVENNA -- In the last two running events at the Division II regional track and field meet at Ravenna High School Friday, Lisa Davies of West Branch (11 minutes, 22.38 seconds defeated defending state champ Amy Arnold of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy (11:26.49).
The Warriors' Amanda Scott, Bobbi Cameron, McKenzie Wallace and Jen Weingart took first place in the 4x400 relay in 4 minutes, 15 seconds. That effort allowed the team to edge Buckeye 48-46 for the girls title.
Senior Alex Casi of East Palestine, who had won the long jump (18 feet, 1/4 inch), the 300 hurdles (45.19 seconds) and finished third in the 100 (12.75), finished third in the 200 (25.56) and will make her fourth appearance at next weekend's state meet in Dayton.
Shavers to signin Boardman
BOARDMAN -- Former area boxing standout Earnie Shavers will be signing copies of his autobiography "Earnie Shavers: Welcome to the Big Time" at Barnes and Noble in the Shops at Boardman Park on June 15 from 2-4 p.m.

SARVER, Pa. -- Lernerville Speedway will honor late KDKA announcer by holding the Bill Steinbach Memorial Sprint Race on Friday. The winner will receive an extra $1,700.

CANTON -- The Pro Football Hall of Fame has finalized the seating plan for this year's Enshrinement Ceremony.
The Aug. 3 event has been moved from the Hall of Fame to the Pro Football Hall of Fame field at Fawcett Stadium.
The location will provide a seating capacity of 20,348, nearly double what was previously available.
There are 7,138 reserved seats located in the north and south sideline stands that will be available for purchase for $10.
An additional 2,000-reserved sideline seats have been set aside for tour group operators.
Tickets may be ordered only by mail, with a limit of 10 tickets per order. Requests for tickets should be sent to: Pro Football Hall of Fame, attention Enshrinement Tickets, 2121 George Halas Drive NW, Canton Ohio 44708.
Payment, which must accompany the order, may be made by credit card (Visa or Mastercard), money order or cashier's check. A $1 handling charge per order also must be included. Reserved ticket orders will be mailed by July 15.
Bowling checksnow available
YOUNGSTOWN -- Checks for qualifying finishers in the Youngstown Bowling Association's 70th city tournament are available at the YBA office weekdays from 7-9 p.m.
Austintown Five bowlers Geno Shonce, Robert Meredith, Nick W. Mamrich, Jon Mamrich and Nick J. Mamrich won the team event with 3,515.
With pinfall of 3,626, Every Extreme of Dan Guerrieri, Fred White, Joe Nuzzo, Rich Skelton and Adam Barta won the tournament's actual category. Low in the money in team event was 3,374.
Brian Amos won the singles title with 862 while Adam Barta was actual champion with 815. Low in the money was 739.
John Cambert and Tom Amicone rolled 1,572 for the doubles championship while Bruce Boyd and Ed Roscoe claimed the actual category with 1,530. Low in the money was 1,447.
With 2,293, Adam Barta won the all-events' actual and handicap divisions. Low in the money was 2,151.
Eckenrode,Skelton win
CANFIELD -- With a score of 1,508, Sherri Skelton and Robert Eckenrode won the Youngstown Mixed Doubles Bowling Tournament at Amron Lanes.
Eckenrode rolled 761 actual and Skelton 687 and their handicap was 60. They will be honored at the Youngstown Women's Bowling Association Achievement awards dinner on Oct. 6.
There were 376 entries for a prize fund of $4,008 which included $1,000 by the YWBA and YBA joint committee. Mixed Doubles tournament checks will be mailed to the top 83 places.
Johnson captainsrugby team
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Kristen Johnson, a Springfield graduate, is captain of the Cincinnati-Dayton rugby team that will host the Women's Rugby Division II National Championship on Saturday.
The Cincinnati-Dayton team went undefeated last fall in the Mid-South League, earning a trip to the Midwest Div. II final four this spring.
After winning the Midwest title, the team was invited to attend the national championships.
Johnson started playing rugby during her freshman year at Ohio University, serving as captain and earning MVP honors her senior year.
After graduation in June 2000, she accepted a job in Dayton. While currently working as a software engineer at NCR Corp., she is completing her MBA at the University of Dayton.
Johnson received Rookie of the Year and MVP honors for the 2000-01 season as well as MVP honors for the 2001-02 season.
Diorio setstrack records
BOARDMAN -- Caitlin Diorio, an eighth grader at Boardman Glenwood Middle School, won championships in the shot put and discus at the Steel Valley Conference and Mahoning County Junior High track meets.
At the Mahoning County meet, she set school record in the shot put (32 feet, 6 inches) and the discus (98-10).

Penguins signOuellet, Crampton
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins signed forwards Michel Ouellet and Steve Crampton on Saturday, the deadline for NHL teams to sign their Canadian Hockey League draft picks from two years ago to retain their rights.
Pittsburgh took Ouellet in the fourth round (124th overall) of the 2000 draft.
The six-foot, 200-pound native of Rimouski, Quebec, recorded 40 goals, 58 assists and 66 penalty minutes in 61 games during his fourth season with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Rimouski Oceanic. Ouellet was ranked second on the team in goals.
