Senior citizens are treated to spaghetti, art

LOWELLVILLE -- About 150 senior citizens turned out for the annual thank-you spaghetti dinner for the last time at the school on Walnut Street. Next year, the event will be in the new school.
The new school, under construction, will house kindergarten through 12th grade, beginning Jan. 6, 2003.
The annual dinner, open to all senior citizens who reside in Lowellville, was started about 15 years ago to thank them for supporting a school levy, said district Superintendent Richard J. Buchenic.
It has continued because "this community has always supported the schools," he said, and is no longer tied to passage of school levies.
The traditional Italian meal, consisting of spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread sticks, hot peppers and ice cream sundaes, is prepared by cafeteria workers and community volunteers.
It coincided with the student fine arts show May 28, so the senior citizens could see some of the things students have accomplished over the past school year, Buchenic added.
Guests also received gift packages containing items such as granola bars, chips and bottled water, donated by area businesses.
