RAVENNA -- Ursuline High School's Adam Chatman took first place in the 300 intermediate hurdles and finished second in the 110 hurdles Friday to qualify for next week's Division II state meet at Dayton.
Chatman, a senior, won the 300 hurdles in 38.46 seconds and his time in the 110 hurdles was 14.79 during the regional championships at Ravenna High stadium.
"I got a bad start in the highs," Chatman said. "I can run them better.
"I was upset about the highs, so I took it out on the threes and refused to lose," Chatman said. "I'm happy I am going to state in both."
In the 300 hurdles, Jefferson's Dustin Olah was second (38.68), Salem's Jason Greenamyer was third (39.54) and Poland's Marc Carbon (39.55) was fourth.
The top four in each event qualified for state.
Petrick advances
Ryan Petrick of Champion took first place in the 800-meter run in a school record 1 minute, 54.2 seconds, eclipsing the old mark of 1:56.7 set by Eric Hatch in 1985.
"I was in lane one, so I had to get out quick," Petrick said. "The other runners collapsed on me so I had to wait for the second lap."
Petrick coming around the turn on the second lap made his move and passed several runners, then took the lead down the stretch for the win.
He was scheduled to compete in the 1600, but dropped out to concentrate on the 800.
Shot standouts
George Washko of Lakeview finished second in the shot put with a best-ever toss of 53 feet, 2 inches. Dave Sedlacko of Struthers was third (52-5 3/4).
A junior, Washko said, "Watching all those guys popping 50 feet made me a little nervous. Its my first time going to state and its a wonderful feeling."
His best throw had been 49 feet, 11 inches and he won the district (48-7).
Washko said, "My coaches I was going straight out with my throws, but I got elevation in them today and that was the difference."
Josh Province, Matt Shaw, Neil Fiest and Jarred Grzywna of Lakeview fished second in the 4x100 relay (43.45) and were edged at the tape by Warrensville Heights (43.44).
"We worked hard all year and are getting better each race, Shaw said, "and we'll be better at state."
