Work on intersection
NEW WATERFORD -- Work is expected to begin Aug. 12 on a $652,257 project to improve the intersection of state Route 7 and Crestview Road in Fairfield Township.
Work will entail reconstructing the crossroad and installing new turn lanes, a traffic signal and lighting.
Traffic will be maintained for much of the project, though Crestview Road will be closed near the construction site for 21 days. Dates of the closing will be announced later.
Project completion is expected by Oct. 31.
The Shelly Company, Twinsburg, is contractor for the job, which is being overseen by the Ohio Department of Transportation.
Teen drowns in creek
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- A 15-year-old boy drowned in a creek while swimming with friends Tuesday, police said.
Kevin Modro of New Brighton was pronounced dead around 5 p.m. after divers fished his body from the Connoquenessing Creek in Wayne Township, authorities said.
Police said Modro was swimming with six friends when he failed to surface. A friend attempted to save him but was unsuccessful, police said. His body was found by police divers about 20 feet from the north shore at about 4:45 p.m.
Samuel Teolis, a deputy Lawrence County coroner, said the boy was likely trying to swim across the creek.
Wrongful-firing suit
YOUNGSTOWN -- Smith Township trustees are being sued in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court by an Akron man who says he was wrongly fired from his job as a township constable.
Dean C. Prosperi is seeking more than $25,000 in damages. The suit says Prosperi was fired for failing to withdraw an arrest warrant after being instructed by a supervisor to do so.
He's suing on grounds of wrongful discharge, defamation of character and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Probation in theft
YOUNGSTOWN -- Lucille Vukovich, 36, of Campbell was placed on two years' probation Tuesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. She had pleaded guilty in June to one count of theft for stealing more than $5,000 from her employer.
Judge James C. Evans ordered Vukovich to serve the first 30 days of probation in the county jail and the next 30 days on electronically monitored house arrest.
Prosecutors said she stole from Cambridge Investments of Youngstown, where she was a bookkeeper. The company's owner, Jeff Moffie, has filed a civil lawsuit against Vukovich to recover the money.
Family Day in Warren
WARREN -- Family Day will be observed from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the gazebo downtown. Magician Gary Morton and disc jockey Dr. Rock will provide the entertainment.
Families are encouraged to bring picnic baskets, chairs and games. The event was started in 1992 by Nick Spano as a way to honor the family as a loving support group.
Spano teaches math and study skills and is the proficiency coordinator at Warren John F. Kennedy High School, where he is about to begin his 30th year.
Wern heads heart group
WARREN -- Maureen Wern, president of Wern & amp; Associates long-term care consultants and Wern/Harris Data Express of Warren, has been named president of the board of the Trumbull County division of the American Heart Association.
An active volunteer for nine years, Wern was chairman for the annual Heart Light Gala for five years and was involved in the American Heart Walk.
Eight new members also have been named to the Trumbull board: Trudy Bayman, Jean Ciarrochi, John Eaton, Atty. Josphua Garris, Dr. Mazen Mahjoub, Cher Mishorich, Sheri Spano and Mary Jo Sullivan.
Quick-change artists
COITSVILLE -- Township police are warning local businesses that quick-change artists have been in the area.
Police took reports Tuesday from two businesses where two men confused the clerks by asking for various denominations of bills. The men left each business in a blue Chevrolet Beretta. The clerks later realized they gave back more in change than they should have.
Lt. Allan P. Morris said the quick-change artists approach when the register is busy with customers.
