WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers moved within two games of first place in the Pinckney Division with a 4-2 victory in the New York-Penn League over the Williams port Crosscutters on Sunday at Bowman Field.

A former standout at UCLA, Francisco went 2-for-5, while Slocum got his first win of the season, striking out four and walking one.

The victory also enabled Mahoning Valley (21-19) to cut its deficit in the New York-Penn League's Pinckney Division. First-place Auburn lost to Oneonta 9-2.
After Simon Young allowed two unearned runs in two innings for the Scrappers, Dan Rich recorded his first save.
Jeff Haase and Andy Baxter each added two hits for the Scrappers, with Baxter, who drove in a run, doubling. Pat Osborn hit an RBI double for the Scrappers' other run.
Mahoning Valley won despite committing three errors.
Roberto Novoa (4-2) was the losing pitcher. He allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings, striking out five and walking none.
Mike Collum went 1-for-3 for Williamsport (25-15), which maintained first place in the McNamara Division, driving in his team's only runs of the game.
