CHARITY GOLF United Way's annual event set for Sept. 16

This year's outing will feature a new modified two best balls of four format called "shamble."
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 14th Annual Youngstown-Mahoning Valley United Way golf outing will be Sept. 16 at Youngstown Country Club.
Registration and a lunch buffet (putting green and driving range open) will begin at 10:30 a.m.
There will be a shotgun start at noon, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar 5 p.m., and awards and a raffle at 6 p.m.
This year's outing will feature a new modified two best balls of four format called "shamble," in which each player hits a tee shot, the best positioned ball is selected, and each player then plays his ball from that spot. The low two scores are recorded.
There also will be skill prizes and a putting contest.
The field is limited to 144 golfers, and soft spikes and proper golf attire are required.
The $1,000 sponsorship package includes a golf foursome, Youngstown Country Club golf shirt for each golfer, free gifts at registration, a sleeve of balls donated by Youngstown Buick Pontiac GMC Truck for each golfer, lunch buffet, hors d'oeuvres reception, half-page ad in event program and hole sponsorship.
Golfer also may help by: purchasing a hole sponsorship for $100; placing a business card size ad in the event program for $50; donating merchandise or a gift certificate ($25 minimum value) for the raffle; and donating a fun promotional item for the golfer's complimentary "goodie bag."
Proceeds from the event benefit the 2002 Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way campaign.
