COLUMBIANA CORNER Businesses seek decorum in park

Fed up with the racket, littering and periodic disturbances a group of young people is producing this summer at a small Salem municipal park, downtown business people are fighting back.
A petition is being circulated asking city officials to do something about the almost daily gatherings, which generally begin late in the afternoon and last well into the evening.
Police have said there's little they can do unless those visiting the park, located along East State Street, are caught in the act of doing something wrong.
Much ado
Columbiana County residents will have plenty to do this week for local entertainment.
The county fair, held in Lisbon, starts today and runs through Sunday.
In Salem on Saturday, a frog-jumping contest is being held in the municipal parking lot at East Pershing and Penn streets. The event begins at 12:30 p.m.
Pay attention, Don
Columbiana City Councilman Don Leonard has been vocal at nearly every meeting the past year or so about the need to purchase a new firetruck.
Mayor Lowell Schloneger has explained nearly as often that the city can't yet show how it would pay back a loan for the bulk of the purchase.
At a recent council meeting, Leonard suffered a momentary attention lapse as council was voting on another matter.
Leonard snapped to attention when he heard the council clerk call his name, and admitted he had been distracted.
"I'm sorry, what are we voting on?"
"The firetruck, Don," Schloneger cracked.
