WESTERN RESERVE School board considers open-enrollment policy

The board also voted to raise lunch prices 25 cents.

BERLIN CENTER -- The Western Reserve Local Board of Education is considering an open-enrollment policy.
During its meeting Tuesday, the board accepted for consideration an open-enrollment policy proposed by Superintendent Charles Swindler, who said the policy should be voted on at the Aug. 8 meeting to be in effect for the coming school year.
The proposal outlines the procedures for application, the limits for accepting pupils and transportation issues. Swindler said the board's options are to maintain closed enrollment, offer open enrollment to children from adjoining districts (West Branch, Canfield, Southeast and Jackson-Milton), or open enrollment to pupils from all districts.
In other business, the board:
URaised lunch prices by 25 cents, bringing the cost at the elementary school to $1.50, at the middle school to $1.75, and at the high school to $2. The cost of milk was raised to 35 cents. Swindler noted that the cafeteria ended the school year with an approximate $22,000 deficit.
UHired Michelle Senn of Canfield as a middle school teacher at a salary of $26,344.
UGranted high school teacher Cosette Hough of Canfield a supplemental contract for $1,449 as Quiz Bowl adviser.
UHired Thomas Koniowsky Jr. of Girard and Bradley Speece of North Jackson as assistant football coaches at salaries of $3,477 each, and Patricia Amendolea of Youngstown as a junior high volleyball coach for $2,608.
UAwarded Rhiel Supply of Youngstown a contract to supply paper towels for the district at $15.90 per case.
UAuthorized spending $3,790 to install a restroom for the handicapped at the middle school.
