Hall of Fameto induct six
YOUNGSTOWN -- Six new members of the Youngstown State University Athletics Hall of Fame will be inducted prior to YSU's Homecoming football game against Southern Illinois on Nov. 2.
The six members -- the smallest group in school history -- to make up the class of 2002 are: former baseball standout Mike Zaluski (1974-77), former football players Sam Pagano (1951-54), Archie Herring (1987-1990) and All-American Dave Roberts (1989-92); former women's basketball standout and assistant coach Diane McFadden, formerly Rappach (1988-92); and longtime contributor Sam Colucci, who died in 1998.

Babe Ruth teamwins in shutout
ZANESVILLE -- The Youngstown Babe Ruth All-Stars' 15-year-old team picked up a second-round state tournament victory Monday, holding on to a 1-0 lead for the win against tournament host Zanesville.
Andy Todor pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only six hits and striking out five. John Foty's double in the bottom of the second drove in Dan Balog for the game's only run. Todor was helped by outstanding defense, including the fine play of infielders John Warren, Balog and Lou Kopachy.
Brian Daugherty caught a line drive and tossed it to second for the game-ending double play.
Youngstown will play in the winners bracket final against Steubenville today.
Youngstown Starsdefeat Newark 9-1
NEWARK -- Mike Bartos and Dave Diyorio combined to pitch a four-hitter, while Mark Rossi had a two-run single as the Youngstown All-Stars rolled to a 9-1 win over Newark on Monday in a winner's bracket quarterfinal of the state Babe Ruth Tournament for 14-year-old players.
Bartos pitched six innings, while Diyorio got the last-inning save. Kevin Sakora and Jared Bartholomew each chipped in with two singles and one RBI.
Youngstown, which won its opener Saturday over Mount Vernon 5-3, advanced to a winner's bracket semifinal today at noon against Steubenville.
If Youngstown wins today, it will qualify for Wednesday's finals.
Mill Creek champs
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mill Creek Junior Baseball League's Colt team placed first with a record of 19-3. Players are Ryan Basora, Ben Davis, Nick Getsy, Adam Harvey, Charles Hodge, Jerry Hunter, Steve Mitchell, Eddie Morales, Brett Neely, Nick Pope, John Simon, Matt Starr, Craig Wood and D.J. Yokely. The team is managed by Ed Morales and assisted by Jerry Hunter.
B.B. Roonersheaded to tourney
TROY -- The 2002 B.B. Rooners baseball team (18 and under), with an impressive 56-8 record, will be traveling to Troy to participate in the NABF Regional Tournament this week.
The Rooners had a successful regular season as they finished second in the Greater Akron Baseball Federation with only one loss.

Joe Amendol of Austintown recently recorded a hole-in-one at Riverview Golf Course. The town where he resides was incorrect.
Football forecastset for Aug. 7
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman Lions Club will hold its 34th Denny Barrett Memorial Football Forecast Aug. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Operating Engineers Hall.
Youngstown City Series, Steel Valley and Metro Athletic Conference coaches will tell about their teams' chances for the 2002 season.

Premier soccer teamcaptures tourney
The Mahoning Valley Premier U-13 girls soccer team won the Niagara Pioneer Soccer International U-14 age division tournament.
Mahoning Valley topped Brockport New York Blizzards 3-1, Rochester Greece Eclipse 2-0, tied Jordon, Ontario Lincoln 1-1, then defeated Ontario, New York Waynes Wings for the title.
Members of the team are Stephanie Armstrong, Erin Brodell, Jackie Cavalier, Emily Dolsak, Allison Hess, Maureen Malone, Allie Naples, Kelly Reardon, Jill Roemer, Samantha Rohrman, Tori Rumble, Hallie Seiser, Samantha Stanich, Katie Stull and Sara Weigel.
