SOFTBALL Valley Sting Purple ends season at championship

The team won six games in national competition before finishing runner-up.
SALEM, Va. -- The Valley Sting Purple 14-and-under fastpitch softball team made it to the championship game of the 86-team NSA "B" World Series last week.
In their first game of the tournament, Valley Sting defeated the Carolina Flames of North Carolina 6-3. Jaclyn Carpenter led the offense with two hits and Kasey Karr and Amber Adley added two RBIs each.
Valley Sting won 8-0 over the Delco Pride of Pennsylvania in their next game. Allie Patton had two hits, including a bases-loaded triple, and Adley added two hits and three RBIs. Karr shut out the Pride with a one-hitter.
No-hitter
Karr threw a no-hitter in the next game and struck out 11 to get the win over the Bay State Panthers of Massachusetts. Lia Gordon, Darlene Bott and Karr had two hits each in the offensive effort.
Trisha Dreslinski scored twice to lead the Sting to a 3-2 win over Diamond Fever of Virginia in their next game.
The Sting lost 8-0 to the Hurricanes of North Carolina in their fifth game and moved to the loser's bracket.
The team defeated the Port City Cyclones of North Carolina 9-3 in their first game in the loser's bracket. Contributing to the 19-hit effort were Ashley Conger, Jillian Moga and Patton with three hits apiece.
Carpenter pitched the Sting to a 5-4 win over the Amherst Lightning of New York for the team's sixth win of the tournament. Gordon had two hits and three RBIs, while Ciera Urichich had two hits.
After advancing to the championship game of the loser's bracket, the Sting faced the Hurricanes, the team that defeated them in the fifth game of the tournament.
10th inning win
The score was tied 1-1 after seven innings, and the teams played three extra innings using the international tiebreaker before the Sting pulled out a 9-7 victory in the 10th.
Karr pitched all 10 innings for the Sting, and Dreslinski and Conger had two hits apiece.
The Sting advanced to the championship game against the undefeated Carolina Cobras. After a week of back-to-back games, the Sting fell to a fresh Cobra team 8-1 to finish runner-up in the tournament.
The team compiled a season record of 54-12. Sting players are Jenna Susany, Conger, Patton and Urichich of Poland; Carpenter and Karr of Champion; Gordon of Leavittsburg; Adley, Bott, Dreslinski and Moga of Kingsville; and Pugh of Newton Falls.
