Death investigated
HUBBARD -- The Trumbull County coroner's office and city police are investigating the death of a 58-year-old woman whose body was found this morning. Acting Police Chief Kenneth Olyer said the woman was found by an acquaintance, sitting in a bedroom chair about 7 a.m. at 251 Clingan St.
In critical condition
WARREN -- A 22-year-old Niles man is in critical condition this morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center after being struck with a baseball bat.
Anthony R. Koren, of Ninth Street, Niles, was hit with a bat during a fight in the 1700 block of Elm Road.
Koren told police that around 7:45 p.m. Monday a group of people in another vehicle told him to stop his car and a fight broke out.
No arrests have been made.
Increased patrols
NILES -- Police are increasing patrols in the area of West Park Avenue after hearing complaints of drugs and other disturbances there at Wednesday's council meeting.
Concerned property owners in that area said people are openly dealing and using drugs along that street and they have been unsuccessful in getting help from the police.
There was a meeting Monday to address the situation with residents, Police Chief Bruce Simeone, Mayor Ralph Infante, Safety-Service Director Donald Allen and councilmen Stephen G. Papalas, D-at-large, and Robert L. Marino, Jr, D-at-large.
Simeone said the issues of junk vehicles and housing have already been addressed in the area. He added that officers would "be as visible as possible."
Trestle damage
JOHNSTON -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating if a truck that damaged a railroad trestle was permitted to carry a large construction digger. The 2000 Freightliner, driven by Earnest Hinkle of Kentucky, was northbound on state Route 5 around 9:50 a.m. Monday when it struck the trestle, a patrol spokeswoman said. Officials said the construction digger was too high for the 13-foot, 6-inch tall bridge. The bridge is damaged and all train traffic has been diverted until the trestle is repaired, officials said.
Charged in robbery
HUBBARD -- A 44-year-old New Castle, Pa., man is in Trumbull County Jail charged in a robbery of Arby's restaurant at Interstate 80 and Route 62/7 on Sunday.
William Quinn of Boston Avenue appeared Monday before Girard Municipal Judge Michael Bernard, who set bond at $75,000 on charges of aggravated robbery, drug abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Township police Detective Mike Begeot alleged that Quinn robbed the restaurant of an undetermined amount of cash. The robber told the clerk he had a weapon.
Begeot said police were called to the Truck World Motel on Monday and found that the man in a room matched a description of the robber.
Clown carnival
HOWLAND -- Clowns will overrun the Avalon Inn from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday for the annual Assorted Nutz clown carnival. Members of the local clowning club will perform skits, magic tricks, blow up balloons and paint faces. The public is invited. Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for children.
Literacy benefit
HOWLAND -- Sprint Yellow Pages and the Alliance Community Outreach program will conduct a Recycle for Literacy event from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Wal-Mart parking lot, Elm Road. Trumbull County residents may raise money for area adult literacy programs by recycling their outdated telephone directories. Sprint will donate $1 for every directory collected, up to $3,000.
Speaker on park
CORTLAND -- Cindy Orth, naturalist at Mosquito Lake State Park, will be the guest speaker at Lake Vista of Cortland's Breakfast at the Lake, 10 a.m. Aug. 28. Lake Vista of Cortland is at 303 N. Mecca Road (state Route 46).
