We can't win for losing

It has been said that one of humanity's greatest inventions is air conditioning. Instead of snoozing through the hottest hours of the day, as is the custom in many warm-weather countries, the ever-industrious American can stay busy from nine to five -- or later -- oblivious of the increasing heat beyond his or her thermal-paned window.
But in these days of unseasonably torrid temperatures, it becomes not a little ironic to learn that the more we use our air conditioners, the higher the temperature in our cities. Motors produce, heat, you see, even those that run air conditioners.
It doesn't seem fair that comfort should come with that extra price.
