NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE Scrappers slide past Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.I ju -- Three pitchers combined on a six-hitter as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers used an efficient attack to defeat the Staten Island Yankees 2-1 Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.
Keith Ramsey (1-1) pitched the first four innings for the Scrappers (17-14) and left with a 2-1 lead when he approached his 65-pitch count. Ramsey allowed five hits, no walks and struck out six.
Winning pitcher Michael Hernandez threw the next two innings for Mahoning Valley and permitted just one walk to the seven Yankees he faced.
Scrappers closer Ignacio Montano got the save although the Yankees (17-14) had a runner on third before a groundball ended the game.
The Scrappers were held to three hits and stranded just one runner during the game.
Homer-happy
In the second inning, Brian Wright reached on an error. Scrapper catcher Jeff Haase homered to left for a 2-0 lead.
Haase, who was hitting .320 with four homers and 14 RBIs entering the game, belted a two-run home run in the first inning Thursday as the Scrappers defeated Batavia, 8-3.
He leads the team with five homers.
The next 10 Scrappers were retired before Andrew Baxter singled to right with one out in the fifth. He was retired on a double play ball by Mike Conroy.
The next four Scrappers went down in order before Wright singled with one out in the seventh. He was stranded on second.
The teams played a doubleheader Saturday after Friday's game was rained out. They will play the final game of the three-game series today at 5:05 p.m.
Auburn, the first-place team in the Pinckney Division, will be at Cafaro Field for a three-game series beginning Monday, then Jamestown comes in Thursday for two games.
