YOUNGSTOWN Woman awaits sentence for wreck

The defendant is a nurse and the mother of 15-month-old twins.

YOUNGSTOWN -- A 34-year-old Warren mother faces up to five years in prison after pleading guilty in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to aggravated vehicular manslaughter for causing a wreck on Interstate 76 that killed another driver.
Ann Creekmore, a nurse and new mother, was speeding home from her Akron job April 28, 2001, after working a 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift, when she fell asleep near the Bailey Road exit in Jackson Township, said Assistant Prosecutor Jay Macejko.
Her vehicle rear-ended one driven by Sue S. Gold, 57, of North Benton, before sliding into a center median, Macejko said. Gold's vehicle went to the right and rolled several times, causing injuries that killed her.
Plea agreement
Under a plea agreement, the state dropped charges of involuntary manslaughter and speeding. Macejko said he also would not oppose to Creekmore receiving driving privileges for work following resolution of the case.
Macejko said Gold's injuries were gruesome and called it "just a horrible accident." She had been on her way to a Sharon, Pa., furniture store to buy a couch for a friend. Creekmore had been ticketed for speeding on Route 76 three months before the crash.
Defense attorney Charles Richards said his client has twins who are now 15 months old. He said she chose to plead guilty because she wanted to do the right thing and be able to move on.
"She's emotionally distraught over this and wants to get it behind her," Richards said. "She has a tremendous amount of remorse over this and wants to be responsible, so she admitted her guilt."
Creekmore remains free on personal recognizance, pending sentencing.
