CANFIELD -- The school board unanimously approved raising the price of half-pint cartons of milk sold in the school cafeterias from 30 cents to 35 cents and hired seven certified workers and one classified worker before going into executive session during a regular meeting Wednesday evening.
The closed-door meeting was expected to last three hours while the board and several invited guests questioned the final three candidates for the superintendent's job, said Board President Mark Squicquero.
Tonight, the board could vote to enter into negotiations with one of those three -- Dennis Kowalski, Strongsville schools superintendent; Charles Swindler, Western Reserve schools superintendent; or Dante Zambrini, Canfield's schools' assistant superintendent.
In previous interviews, Squicquero told The Vindicator he expects the board to hire a new superintendent by early August.
The new superintendent will replace Doug Hiscox, who resigned his post effective Jan. 31, 2003.
Employees hired
New employees hired during Wednesday's meeting are: Vicki Latimer as a permanent math substitute, Canfield Village Middle School, at $28,469; Vince Carnevale as seventh-grade permanent substitute, at $28,469; Candida DiMatteo as high school foreign language teacher at $17,793 for working half days.
The board also hired Bill DeAngelo, John Hoopes and Michael Schragel, all retired Canfield teachers, who will teach no more 85 days and be paid the same daily rate as what they were paid when they retired. Dottie Burke, a retired special-education teacher at Hilltop Elementary School, was also hired to work a little less than half days at the same rate she was paid before she retired.
In other action, the board voted to accept the resignations of three instructors: Marina Ciccone, special-education teacher; Ellen Lettrich, high school social studies teacher; and Kalynn Welch, LD tutor. All of their resignations are effective Aug. 31.
