SLAYING Officer: Witness saw face of man

The jury saw a videotape of another witness's statement.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Eddie Bryant was first charged with murder and then identified, just before the trial, his lawyer Mark Lavelle says.
Bryant, 25, of Cohasset Drive, is on trial in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for the March 19 shooting death of Stephen Shackleford, 29, of Victory Annex housing complex on the city's East Side.
Armin Moore, 24, of Kendis Circle, and Lorice Moore, 24, of McGuffey Road, are also charged with murder and awaiting trial.
There is an outstanding warrant for Calvin Moore, 30, no address available. It's unclear if the Moores are related.
Bryant surrendered to police March 22 and was indicted by a Mahoning County grand jury March 28.
Officer's testimony
Youngstown Police Sgt. Gerald Maietta testified Tuesday that a resident of Victory Annex told him on the day of the shooting she didn't think she could identify the shooters.
Under questioning by Lavelle, Maietta said he returned to the apartments and talked to the witness July 3 with 18 mug shots, including one of Bryant.
Maietta testified initially he didn't think the witness would identify the shooter because she was scared. But the detective said there were three people outside her window after the shooting and the witness could identify one of them.
"The others ran up the walkway, and Mr. Bryant was able to look up at her," Maietta testified.
Another eyewitness also of Victory Annex, claimed to have known the shooter as "Duke."
A videotape of that statement made to police March 19 was played for the jury.
One of the gunmen was wearing a red cap and a coat with a dragon design.
Maietta testified he did not try to get a search warrant for Bryant's home to look for the clothing or a weapon.
Under questioning by Lavelle, Maietta said he had not located a purple car that may have been linked to the shooting.
Testimony was to continue today.
