Sharon school board votes on supervisor of curriculum

SHARON, Pa. -- Elementary Principal Michael Calla is now the supervisor of curriculum and instruction for the Sharon City School District.
Calla has served as principal of Musser Elementary School in the Sharon system for the past seven years and has a total of 14 years of service in the district.
The school board voted 7-2 Monday to appoint him supervisor of curriculum and instruction, replacing Dr. Donna DeBonis, who was named superintendent of the district last month.
Calla's new salary has yet to be negotiated, school officials said.
Directors Lora Adams-King and Linda Valentino cast the dissenting votes, but both said they have nothing against Calla and feel he will do a good job.
Surprise vote
Adams-King, president of the board, said later that she didn't know the hiring of a supervisor of curriculum and instruction was on Monday's agenda.
It was added after the agenda was prepared, and Adams-King said she didn't see it until she arrived for Monday's meeting.
The board must now find an elementary principal before the start of school.
The board voted unanimously to make social studies teacher John Vannoy the new athletic director at a salary of $5,217 a year.
He succeeds Jim Wildman, who has retired.
Mary Jo Staunch, a secretary in the district and former girls' basketball coach, was named assistant athletic director at an annual salary of $2,899.
