Transactions: Third baseman/catcher Brad Guglielmelli and first baseman Sean Manfredonia of the Scrappers were released by the Cleveland Indians. Guglielmelli was the 11th-round selection in the 2001 draft. He was batting .200 with two RBIs in five games this season. Manfredonia, the Independence native who played with the Youngstown Express, appeared in eight games this season, with a .238 average and two RBIs. He was signed as a non-drafted free agent in January. Shortstop Angel Abreu, who went 0-for-2 in Monday's game, was sent to Rookie League Burlington. He batted .216 with the Scrappers this season.
Moving on up: In his office after the game, Scrappers manager Chris Bando shook hands with left-handed pitcher Shane Wallace and thanked him for his effort. The reason? Wallace was promoted to Class A Kinston. He went through the clubhouse Monday night saying his good-byes. In five starts with the Scrappers, Wallace was 2-2 with a 3.42 ERA.
Sitting it out: The Scrappers' top two hitters -- center fielder Ben Francisco and catcher Jeff Haase -- were not in the starting lineup Monday. Francisco, who had his 12-game hitting streak snapped Sunday, leads the team with a .377 average. Haase is second with a .366 mark. "Francisco had a little strain and Haase is my backup catcher, so he probably will only play two times a week," Bando said. Francisco was originally in the lineup but was a late scratch after he strained a muscle in his shoulder while swinging a bat. "Hopefully [Francisco] will be ready in the next day or two," Bando said.
Slow start: The first inning took 35 minutes to complete. Each team scored two runs. Scrappers pitcher Victor Kleine gave up two singles and hit a batter to start the game. Jonathan Van Every led off the bottom half with a triple off Batavia starter Carlos Cabrera.
