Trumbull Clinic: The Trumbull Memorial Hospital Foundation Golf Clinic for seniors and physically-challenged players was well-attended at the Squaw Creek driving range. Five LPGA Tour players conducted the clinic, giving instructions and exhibitions for the group. Taking part this year were tour veterans Susan Sanders, Nancy Bowen, Michelle Bell and Erika Wicoff along with tour rookie Clarissa Childs.
Junior Clinic: Youngstown State University took over sponsorship of the junior golf clinic this year, and the event was a big success. Over 200 youngsters took part in the event, which was under the direction of LPGA teaching pro Lisa Becka of Columbiana and Copeland Hills Golf Course.
Range-finder: Joanne Morley of Sale, England, who is in her sixth season on the LPGA Tour, was using the help of a range-finder to help with the distances on the holes at Squaw Creek Monday during The Vindicator Pro-Am tournament.
"It was made for hunters, but you are seeing it more and more on the golf courses these days. You point it at an object and it gives you the exact yardage. Obviously you can't use it during the tournament, but we like to use it during practice rounds and pro-am events," Morley said.
Rookie Event: Of the 26 rookies on the LPGA Tour this season, 15 of them will be in this week's tournament. Nine of the 15 in the tournament are international players. Two other rookies just missed getting into the event at the Monday qualifier. The rookies in the field are Beth Bauer, Elizabeth Bowman, Jeanne-Marie Busuttil, Angela Buzminski, Clarissa Childs, Natalie Gulbis, Hilary Homeyer, Shiho Katanho, Stephanie Keever, Candie Kung, Jung Yeon Lee, Sun Hee Lee, JoAnne Mills, Mayumi Nakajima, and Giulia Sergas.
Pulled out: Charlotta Sorenstam, sister of Annika, withdrew from the tournament. Annika, the No. 1 women's player in the world, also is absent from this field. Charlotta was replaced by rookie Clarissa Childs. Two other players also have withdrawn, but their names weren't released. They were replaced by Minny Yeo and Michelle Bell.
Ohioans in field: There are seven Ohio natives on the LPGA Tour this year, and six of them are in the tournament. Two-time champion Tammie Green of Somerset, Marianne Morris of Middletown, Barb Mucha of Parma Heights, Kristal Parker-Manzo of Columbus, Susie Parry of Salem and Michele Redman of Zanesville will participate. Meg Mallon is a graduate of Ohio State.
LPGA birthday: Dina Ammaccapane will celebrate her 34th birthday Sunday.
Celebrities in Shootout: The Butler Wick Shootout today at 4 p.m. will feature five area celebrities, who will team up with two LPGA professionals in a four-hole scramble shootout. YSU athletic administrator Paul McFadden, WKBN radio's Dan Rivers, WFMJ-TV sports anchor Mike Case, WYTV sports director Bob Hannon and WKBN-TV host Dave Sess will team up with Dorothy Delasin, Nancy Lopez, Pat Hurst, Janice Moodie, Michelle McGann, Tammie Green, Danielle Ammaccapane, Rachel Teske, Sherri Steinhauer and Michelle Redman.
