Panezich earns twowins and a second
YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Nick Panezich, who will be a sophomore at Springfield High, took home two first place finishes and a second place finish at Sunday's five-state AAU Regional Track and Field Meet at Rynearson Stadium at Eastern Michigan University.
He finished first in the discus with a throw of 167 feet, 4 inches, first in shot put (52-6) and second in the javelin (123-7).
He has qualified for the AAU National Meet August 7-9 in Knoxville, Tenn. He has also qualified for the USA Track and Field Meet from July 25-27 in Omaha, Neb.
YMHA hoopsregistration
YOUNGSTOWN -- Workouts and registration for the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority's Midnight Basketball League continues today and Wednesday at Rockford Village (the old Kimmelbrook apartments) from 9 p.m. to midnight.
The league is open to players ages 18 to 26. To register, bring proof of age (driver's license, birth certificate) and address.
Colin Clementethird at qualifier
GROVE CITY -- Colin Clemente of Hubbard Township shot par 72-72--144 to place third in the U.S. Junior Amateur golf qualifier at Grove City Country Club.
Last week at the Pennsylvania Junior State Championship Clemente placed 12th in a field with a 76-74--150.
Clemente is an alternate to the U.S. Junior Amateur to be held in Atlanta.
Striders will runin national meet
DAYTON -- Seven individuals and two relay teams will represent the Warren Striders Track Club at the 2002 USATF National Junior Championship to be held in Omaha, Neb. July 23-28.
Jordan Moxley won the girls 10-under long jump and Ashley Spencer took the girls 17-18 high jump at the regional meet held in Dayton.
Moxley was second in the 400 while Aris Richburg (boys 11-12 200), Destinee Hicks (girls 13-14 100) and Sean McNair (boys 17-18 1500) also too second place awards.
Krieger to playat Ohio Wesleyan
BOARDMAN -- Boardman High graduate Michael Krieger will play baseball at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Krieger pitched and played infield for the Spartans.
The Battling Bishops went 35-13 in the spring and took second in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

NEW YORK -- Dee Kantner, one of the NBA's two female referees, has been fired.
NBA vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson said Kantner was not making sufficient progress in her own development.
Kantner and Violet Palmer joined the NBA's officiating staff in 1997.
Irabu in hospital
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Texas Rangers closer Hideki Irabu was hospitalized with small blood clots in his lungs.
Irabu was taken to St. Luke's Hospital by assistant trainer Ray Ramirez about 4 a.m. after complaining of chest pains and shortness of breath.
Irabu, who will fly with the team back to Texas after tonight's game, was given medication to dissolve clots.

INVERNESS, Fla. -- Ted Williams' children are close to announcing an agreement over whether the body of one of baseball's greatest hitters will remain frozen, an attorney said.
Bobby-Jo Williams Ferrell and her half siblings, John Henry Williams and Claudia Williams, met at a lawyer's office.
Matthews retires
HOUSTON -- Bruce Matthews, the most durable offensive lineman in NFL history, announced his retirement from the Tennessee Titans after 296 games over 19 years spent entirely with the franchise, including the first 14 when it was the Houston Oilers.
