Teens' fireworksblamed for damages
BROOKFIELD -- Teen-agers playing with fireworks Sunday are being blamed for a series of fires that resulted in an estimated $100,000 worth of damage.
Township Fire Capt. Dave Coffy said the investigation has been turned over to police because it's not known which of two teens caused the damage.
Coffy said the boys were setting off bottle rockets late Sunday afternoon. One caught a garage on fire at 8171 Lindberg Road. The garage was destroyed.
The fire spread and burned down a second garage, Coffy said.
Flammable materials inside one garage exploded and fueled the flames.
A storage barn and a car in one of the garages also were destroyed. Heat damaged two houses.
Tree-branch death
NILES -- A Niles man died of head injuries Sunday morning.
Police said Louis Zell, 21, of Fenton Street, was struck on the head by a tree branch as he cut down a tree in the woods behind Clay Street about 6:30 a.m.
Holdup in Brookfield
BROOKFIELD -- A robber held up Standard Market on Warren-Sharon Road on Sunday.
Township Police Chief Daniel Faustino said a man walked in shortly before 6 p.m., pulled a knife on the female clerk and took cash.
Old telephone bookswill aid literacy classes
WARREN -- Volunteers from Alliance Community Outreach Program and Sprint Yellow Pages will collect old telephone books at Wal-Mart on Elm Road from 8 a.m. to noon July 27 to benefit programs for adult literacy.
For each telephone book collected, Sprint Yellow Pages will donate $1 to adult literacy programs, up to $3,000. The money will be used to buy books for tutors and students.
Last year, Trumbull County residents recycled more than three tons of directories, resulting in a $3,000 donation. Sprint Yellow Pages expects to donate up to $40,000 nationally to adult literacy programs this year.
The company is in the process of delivering more than 130,000 new phone books to Trumbull County residents.
Mosquito spraying
HOWLAND -- The township will be sprayed for mosquitoes from 9 tonight to 5 a.m. Tuesday. Residents are asked to close their windows, keep pets indoors and not leave any food outside during spraying.
In case of rain, spraying will take place Tuesday evening.
Child car seat inspection
HOWLAND -- The Howland Fire Department will inspect child car seats by reservation only from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Niles Cortland Road N.E. station. There is no charge.
Howland budget meeting
HOWLAND -- The annual township budget meeting will be at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday in the township government center. The regular trustees meeting will follow at 7:30.
4-H Jr. camphas some openings
WARREN -- Camp Whitewood in Windsor will be the site of 4-H Jr. camp for children ages 9 to 13 July 28-31.
Participants do not need to be members of 4-H to attend camp, which will follow a circus theme.

School board meeting
VIENNA -- Wednesday's board of education meeting has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday in the board offices at 4434-B Warren-Sharon Road.
The board will first meet in executive session to discuss employment, with the open session set for 7 p.m.
Farmer's market
SHARON, Pa -- The Farmer's market at the City Centre downtown will offer fresh home-grown produce Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. until noon or until stock runs out.
Market growers will have a variety of locally produced vegetables, fruits, cheeses, bedding and potted plants, honey and cider (in season) throughout the summer. The market started July 6.
