Check-up: With 26 games played, and 50 more to go, Scrappers manager Chris Bando has liked what he has seen so far. "I'm very pleased with how they're playing," he said. "We have a lot of offensive ability here, coupled with solid pitching. The team that plays the best defense and the team that pitches the best is going to win the league. I really think we have the best offensive team in the league. All of our guys have not hit their stride yet."
Moving on up: With his performance Saturday, Scrappers pitcher Michael Rogers moved up to fourth in the New York-Penn League's top 10 rankings. Rogers allowed just one hit in 5 2/3 innings for the win in the Scrappers' 9-0 victory. He is now 2-1 with a 1.57 ERA. Batavia's Carlos Cabrera, who pitches tonight, leads the league with a 4-0 record and 0.51 ERA.
Team effort: Rogers' performance is a byproduct of a Scrappers pitching staff that came into Sunday's game ranked second in the New York-Penn League with a 2.79 ERA. "We put a lot of effort into it," Bando said. "We have meetings every day about how to attack the hitters and we have meetings after every game on what they did wrong. These guys are not only learning, but putting into practice what this organization is trying to teach them."
So close: In the second inning, Bill Peavey rocketed a ball toward the right-center field wall. It was so high and deep that it appeared to be on its way to clearing the wall. However, Batavia right-fielder Andre Marshall jumped to make the catch. On Peavey's way back to the dugout, the crowd gave him a nice ovation.
Attendance marks: Fans came to Cafaro Field in bunches Sunday. The attendance of 5,811 was a season high. The previous high (5,775) came July 10 against Vermont. The home opener against Batavia drew 5,588.
