Four Farrell residents honored
FARRELL, Pa. -- The city honored four of its residents with the first Farrell Citizen of the Year awards during a weeklong homecoming celebration.
Two adults split Citizen of the Year honor, and two Farrell school students were picked for two Junior Citizen of the Year awards.
The four were honored during a ceremony Saturday at the high school football field.
Each was presented with $500 and a certificate of merit. The program is funded by former Farrell teacher Ted Pedas.
The Citizens of the Year are:
Annette Morrison of Shenango Boulevard, for her involvement in the Farrell Parent Teacher Association, starting the Junior Achievement program at Our Lady of Fatima School and volunteer work with the Farrell Midget and Pee-Wee Cheerleading Association. She is a foster parent and an officer in various community organizations and volunteers to work with young people in her church.
Frank Faylo of Wallis Avenue, nominated for volunteer efforts in helping to keep the city clean. He maintains vacant properties that have been abandoned and even spends his time cleaning and cutting the grass on some city-owned properties. He can also be found shoveling snow from sidewalks and driveways in the winter.
Young winners
The Junior Citizens of the Year are:
Shar-dai Peagler of Wallis Avenue, a sophomore at Farrell High School, nominated for creating a program called "KIDS: Kids Inspiring Dreams" for children living in the Steel City Terrace apartments. She also volunteers at the Steel City Community Center and her church.
Jordan Wilkins, of Hamilton Avenue, a seventh-grader at Farrell, nominated for his outstanding citizenship in his activities as a student. He was cited for his polite and courteous attitude toward classmates and teachers and his effort to always put his best foot forward.
The Farrell Alumni Association also named Charles Sanitate, high school principal and a 35-year faculty member, as the recipient of its annual Blue Gold Award.
