BOARDMAN -- A 17-year old township boy is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, which is a felony, and misdemeanor charges of failure to comply with order of a police officer and resisting arrest after a run-in with police Sunday afternoon. Police reports say officers tried to pull over a pickup truck the boy was driving without proper registration just before 3 p.m.
Reports say the boy failed to stop and fled to a garage at his home, in the 100 block of Shields Road, where he scuffled with officers. The boy's dog, according to reports, bit one officer on the ankle, distracting police while the boy ran off. He was found a short time later trying to climb through a basement window at his home. A loaded handgun was found inside the pickup truck.
Girl reports sex assault
BOARDMAN -- Township police are investigating a report made by a 13-year old Poland girl who said a 14-year old boy with whom she is acquainted sexually assaulted her while she was passed out from alcohol abuse at a friend's house. The girl told the police the crime took place last Monday or Tuesday.
Woman survives crash
SALEM -- A Florida woman injured in a motorcycle crash in Columbiana County that killed her husband was in satisfactory condition today at Akron City Hospital.
Beverly Campbell, 51, of Summerfield, Fla., was a passenger on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by her husband, David Campbell, 52.
The Lisbon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported Campbell was driving the motorcycle west on U.S. Route 30 Saturday when it went off the right side of the highway near Depot Road.
Beverly Campbell was taken to Salem Community Hospital and then by medical helicopter to Akron City.
Girl struck by SUV
SALEM -- An 11-year-old Salem girl was struck by a sport-utility vehicle. Aubreyana Yeater of North Broadway Avenue was hit as she rode her bicycle from an alley into the path of a vehicle driven by Mark Calko, 37, of 810 Jennings Ave., police said. The accident occurred about 4:41 p.m. Sunday. No citation was issued. Aubreyana was treated at Salem Community Hospital.
Health-Information Fair
SALEM -- A Health-Information Fair will be July 28 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at United Steelworkers of America Local 1538 Hall, 547 Prospect St. The health fair, sponsored by Salem Democratic Women, features health-care organizations, government agencies and other groups that will provide free information and services, including fingerprinting for children. The Mammogram Van of Boardman will offer mammograms for $90. Call (330) 222-1215 for the required mammogram appointment by Friday. Funding is available for eligible low-income women. Attendees must bring their health insurance card and physician's full name, address and phone number.
Lawsuit in traffic death
YOUNGSTOWN -- The family of an Austintown Fitch High School cheerleader who died in a traffic accident has sued parents of the driver of the car she was riding in, seeking compensatory damages in excess of $50,000.
Renee E. Romito, 15, died in July 2000 after the two-vehicle crash in Geauga County. She and three friends were returning to the Youngstown area after a trip to Pioneer Waterland.
Attorney Timothy E. Franken filed the lawsuit in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court on behalf of Robin J. Romito of Youngstown, executrix of the girl's estate. Named defendants are John P. and Mary Jane Theodore of Mineral Ridge, parents of Deanna M. Theodore.
Deanna drove a Dodge Avenger through a stop sign and was hit by a pickup truck last summer. The car then hit a utility pole and landed in a ditch.
Samantha Mock, 15, was also killed in the crash. Injured were Deanna, who was 16 at the time, and Heidi Monk, 18. The girls were cheerleaders.
Deanna was sentenced in Mahoning County juvenile court to a suspended 90-day detention, 100 hours of community service and a $350 fine, and her license was suspended until she is 21.
The family of Samantha Mock filed a lawsuit against Deanna, her parents and HM Health Services last year.
