Organ donor registry opens to licensed drivers in Ohio

YOUNGSTOWN -- Licensed drivers in Ohio who want to be organ donors now can be listed in The Ohio Donor Registry.
The registry, which began on July 1, was developed by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles and the Ohio Department of Health, in conjunction with the Second Chance Trust Fund Advisory Committee.
The registry is a way to give legal consent for an anatomical gift upon an individual's death. People are automatically entered into the registry if they answer yes to being a donor when issued a new license or identification card.
Ohio Department of Public Safety says nearly 3,000 Ohioans are waiting for organ, eye or tissue donors.
The information on the registry is confidential and access is limited to licensed and certified, organ, tissue and eye procurement organizations.
Those who would like to be a part of the registry before their license or ID card renewal may download a form off www.ohiobmv.com, or they may obtain a form from a local deputy registrar location.
