'Ohio Frontier' is theme of Chautauqua

EAST LIVERPOOL -- The Ohio Humanities Council will pitch its old-fashioned Chautauqua tent in Thompson Park from Wednesday through Saturday to celebrate the region's frontier history.
Scholars and actors will don costumes and portray important figures in history in an effort to both inform and entertain the community.
The theme for this year's Chautauqua is "The Ohio Frontier," so the performers will be playing characters like aristocrat Mary Blennerhassett, folk hero Johnny Appleseed, Indian captive Mary Draper Ingles, frontiersman Simon Kenton and Iroquois Chief John Logan, whose family was killed at Yellow Creek, near East Liverpool.
During the day, "behind-the-scenes" programs for adults and children will be held both at Carnegie Public Library and the Museum of Ceramics in town. For the library's youth programs, contact Mary Deem at (330) 385-2048. To register for the adult programs at the museum, call (330) 386-6001.
Other activities, including pony rides and children's games, will be held in the park during the day.
It's the first year East Liverpool is host of the event, sponsored by several local community groups and businesses.
Before evening performances, guests can bring their own picnic dinners or purchase concessions from local vendors.
