BENEFIT Golf outing to be held at Avalon Lakes



The event will be in the form of a four-person scramble.
HOWLAND -- Area golfers have an opportunity to participate in the Mahoning Valley American Cancer Society's prestigious Tri-County Golf Classic to be held Aug. 12 at Avalon Lakes Golf Course.
The four-person scramble will get under way at 10 a.m. with registration, putting and chipping contests, and a power golf show. Lunch will be served at 11:15 a.m., and players will tee off at 12:30 p.m.
After the teams complete the 18 holes of golf, a longest-drive contest will be held with Ben Witter, a cancer survivor and long-drive champion.
Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., and there will be a silent auction featuring items such as autographed sports memorabilia, a concert and limousine ride, and a trip to Palm Springs, Calif.
The cost is $5,000 per team and includes valet parking, access to the club facilities and beverages.
Each player will receive a pair of golf shoes, a golf shirt and sweater vest, and also will receive a dozen roses and bottle of wine to take home.
Winners from each division may advance to the American Cancer Society State Tournament Sept. 7-9 at Firestone Country Club in Akron. State tournament winners will then go to the national tournament Oct. 25-26 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Patricia Rose, of the Better Business Bureau and a cancer survivor, has been chosen as this year's honoree, and Wayland Russell of Rainbow Rentals is the honorary chairman.
