It's just spoiled milk
YOUNGSTOWN -- A plastic milk jug first suspected of being a drain cleaner bomb turned out to contain spoiled milk.
An East Lucius Avenue woman found the container in the back seat of her car and placed it in her driveway, where it began to swell on Thursday.
The woman called the fire department, which then notified police, who alerted the bomb squad. Bomb squad technicians determined the contents and disposed of the jug.
The woman said the plastic container may have been placed in her car at a Youngstown State University parking lot.
Money for kids
YOUNGSTOWN -- Drug Education Officers of Mahoning Valley, a coalition of six police agencies, is collecting money to send youths to Scrappers baseball games.
Drug Abuse Resistance Education officers from Youngstown, Beaver, Springfield, Boardman, Austintown and the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department are doing the fund raising, said Maj. Michael Budd of the sheriff's department.
An 80-year-old Erie Street man who received a call soliciting money for the games reported the call to police on Thursday, concerned that the fund raising was not legitimate.
Arrested by vice squad
YOUNGSTOWN -- Rayburn Hackette had to be treated for high blood pressure at Forum Northside Medical Center before the county jail would book him Thursday evening on charges that resulted from an arrest by vice squad officers.
Hackette, 48, of West Glenaven Avenue, faces charges of loitering to engage in solicitation, possession of drug paraphernalia (crack pipe), driving under suspension and obstructing traffic.
He also was charged with failing to appear in municipal court on a previous charge of driving under suspension.
Police said Hackette blocked traffic on West Princeton Avenue while he spoke to Kelly Marks, 30, of Hilton Avenue, who had been flagging down cars.
After Marks got into Hackette's car, police approached and arrested them both.
Marks was charged with loitering to engage in solicitation. Both were set for arraignment later today in municipal court.
Bitten by husky
AUSTINTOWN -- A Lancaster Drive woman told police a husky that had attacked her dog also bit her on the hands and arms Thursday.
The woman, 54, was treated at the scene by paramedics. She said the husky attacked her dog at about 7:45 a.m. on Lancaster Drive as she was walking her dog on a leash.
The Husky was wearing only a chrome choker and was not restrained.
The woman said that when she attempted to protect her dog, the husky attacked her.
Police could not determine who owned the husky, which they restrained and later turned over to a Mahoning County deputy dog warden.
Residents told police they had noticed the husky wandering in the neighborhood the last few days.
