LEETONIA -- Two Columbiana women were in stable condition at area hospitals this morning after a two-vehicle crash in Salem Township.
Virgie Hardway, 82, was a passenger in a car driven by Laurie Steeb, 49. Hardway was in St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown. Steeb was in Salem Community Hospital, where another passenger, Nancy Neff, 60, of Leetonia, was treated, a hospital spokeswoman said.
According to the Lisbon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Steeb was driving east on state Route 344 about 5:40 p.m. Wednesday when her car collided with a van driven by Arnum Lingenfelter, 73, of East Liverpool. The patrol said Lingenfelter was driving west on Route 344 and turned into the path of Steeb's car as he tried to turn left onto state Route 11 south.
Lingenfelter, who was not hurt, was cited for failure to yield, the patrol said. Both drivers and passengers were wearing seat belts, the patrol said.
Motorcyclist crashes
LEETONIA -- A village man escaped serious injury after his flight from police ended in the crash of his motorcycle in Salem Township, authorities said.
Leetonia Police Chief John Soldano said Andy Barr, 21, of Columbia Street, is to appear in village mayor's court, charged with reckless operation and fleeing and eluding.
Soldano said a patrolman spotted Barr about 8 p.m. Thursday riding recklessly, headed west on state Route 344 in the village. Soldano said the patrolman attempted to stop Barr, but he sped away.
The patrolman called for assistance from Salem Township Constable Dan Valentine and Perry Township police as Barr was headed in their direction, Soldano said.
He said Barr turned off Route 344 onto Cunningham Road and crashed into a wooded area.
Dam-mowing contractin Mercer County
MERCER, Pa. -- Mercer County commissioners awarded the contract for mowing the county's seven flood control dams to Northeastern Mowing Service Inc., which will do each of the two annual mowings for $5,450.
Contract period is three years for a total cost of $32,700.
Commissioners also approved Thursday the continuation of the county 911 telephone charge rate, which will remain at $1.25 per month per phone for county residents.
Computer training
LISBON -- Low-to-moderate income earners will get an opportunity to learn about computers as part of a $500,000 federal grant Columbiana County is receiving.
Accounting for $327,000 of the grant is a plan to lease 200 personal computers, which in turn will be lent to qualified applicants.
Program participants will use the computers to acquire computer skills.
The grant also will be used to help participants finish their education, learn job skills and find employment.
Fund-raisers planned
SHARPSVILLE, Pa. -- Club Pet Adoption, a no-kill animal rescue in Transfer, Pa, will have two fund-raisers Sunday: A "Cut-a-thon," with games for children, face painting and animals up for adoption, will be held inside Claudia & amp; Company Styling Salon at 106 Mercer Ave.
Haircuts are $5.
A garage sale will run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Sharpsville VFW at 215 Walnut St.
Club Pet Adoption rescues animals from shelters where they are scheduled to be euthanized.
History festival for kids
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A children's history festival is planned for 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday by the Lawrence County Historical Society.
On the grounds of the historical society, 408 N. Jefferson St., there will be a Civil War encampment with re-enactors, hands-on learning stations, crafts, entertainment, reading programs and guided tours of the museum.
There will also be classic automobiles, food, beverage stands and games throughout the day.
An ice cream social will follow at 7 p.m. on the history center's front porch.
It will allow those attending to watch the fireworks from New Castle's Fireworks Festival that evening.
