LEETONIA Pine Street project will tie up traffic

The project will start in about 10 days and take four weeks to complete.
LEETONIA -- Residents and others traveling through Leetonia should avoid the Pine Street area over the next several weeks as a new sidewalk is installed.
Village Administrator Gary Phillips said traffic will be maintained, but sometimes the work may make it necessary to close portions of Pine Street.
Foust Construction Inc. of Girard has the $54,884 contract for sidewalk construction on the west side of Pine from Washington Street south to Main Street.
To take four weeks
Phillips said the work will begin in about 10 days and take about four weeks to complete.
He said that if some work requires the street be closed, village officials will ensure residents have access to their homes.
Phillips said the sidewalk will connect to one completed last year on Washington Street from Pine north to Walnut and along School Street in Washingtonville.
He said many people have been using the north section of sidewalk completed last year for recreational walking or running.
The main benefit of the new sidewalk will be to the Leetonia schools' nearly 900 pupils, who will start school this fall in new facilities.
All the district's pupils, including those from Washingtonville, will be housed in a kindergarten-through-12th-grade building.
Phillips said traffic may also be diverted soon as new fire hydrants and new water valves are installed on the north side, and as a 12-inch waterline in installed on the south side -- on Washington Street from Main Street to the water plant on St. Peter Street.
As with the sidewalk project, travelers through the village are encouraged to avoid those areas as much as possible, and local traffic will be maintained, he said.
