YOUNGSTOWN -- Two houses were fired at in separate shootings late Monday and early today on the South Side.
At 11:45 p.m. Monday, a bullet sailed through a second-floor bedroom window into a house in the 200 block of East Avondale Avenue, missing a man at his desk by 10 feet, police said. The bullet penetrated the window, curtain and lamp shade before lodging in the closet door. A neighbor saw a car drive away.
At 2:15 a.m. today, shots were fired from a car at a house in the 200 block of East Pasadena Avenue. A resident of the house ran outside and returned fire. Bullets damaged the siding, front door and storm door, reports show.
Backhoe stolen
ELLSWORTH -- A John Deere backhoe worth $67,000 has been reported stolen from a construction site at 11020 Kiwatani Trail.
An employee of Granite Construction Co. in North Lima reported the theft Monday to a Mahoning County deputy sheriff. The employee provided the backhoe's serial number and noted that a window in the cab had been missing.
Conserving water
CAMPBELL -- Campbell residents are being asked to conserve water usage from noon Thursday to noon Friday while a meter and a section of water main are replaced at the city's water treatment plant. Water service should not be affected.

Shed fire
AUSTINTOWN -- Fire caused about $1,000 in damage to a shed early today in the back yard at 2277 Innwood Drive.
Firefighters arrived at the home at about 5:40 a.m. to find the shed fully engulfed. They had the fire under control in about 10 minutes.
There were no injuries.
Money reported stolenfrom checking account
AUSTINTOWN -- A Canfield man told police Monday that he believes someone has stolen about $4,500 from his checking account.
The East Main Street man said his checkbook was stolen from his Youngstown business last month.
Police said a woman cashed one of the man's checks for $425 Monday at Second National Bank in Austintown.
Woman finds mansitting in her vehicle
POLAND -- A 24-year-old Yellowcreek Ledges woman walked from her residence into her garage to take out the trash and found a male sitting in her vehicle, village police reports show.
The intruder threw a briefcase and said, "Did you know we were leaving?" before fleeing in a red car parked outside the garage at about 3:30 p.m. Monday.
The woman's husband said he had left the garage unlocked and partially open because of the heat.
Purse snatching suspect
BOARDMAN -- Township police are seeking a woman suspected in a purse snatching during which a woman was sprayed in the eyes.
At about 7:30 p.m. Monday, the woman sprayed a shopper at the Phar-Mor on Tiffany Boulevard with hair spray before taking a purse from the shopper's cart. She then fled in a dark-colored vehicle.
Police think the same person may be responsible for several purses that were stolen from local businesses last week. A thief entered employee offices and back rooms to take purses and used credit cards.
Investigators seek a black woman about 30 with shoulder-length curly hair with blond streaks. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Sgt. Albert Kakascik at (330) 726-4144, ext. 1245.
