FARRELL, PA. Citizen of year awards to be given at event

The celebration begins tonight and runs through Saturday.
FARRELL, Pa. -- Naming of the first recipients of the Farrell Citizen of the Year and the Junior Citizen of the Year awards will highlight the second annual Farrell Homecoming this week.
The awards, funded by grants from former Farrell teacher Ted Pedas, will be presented Saturday at Homecoming festivities at the Farrell High School football field on Roemer Boulevard.
One Citizen of the Year Award carrying a $1,000 stipend will be presented to a Farrell person, group, company or organization that has made significant contributions to the community.
There will be two $500 Junior Citizen of the Year awards for individuals, groups or companies under 21 years old.
Pedas, who also runs an astronomy touring business out of New York City, has been a longtime benefactor of the Farrell Area School District, presenting the district with annual cash gifts to fund special student and other awards as well as to finance improvements to the high school planetarium that bears his name.
He's now extended that generosity to include annual citizen awards, tying those honors to the annual homecoming festivities launched a year ago.
This year's celebration begins this evening and ends Saturday night. All events will be held on the high school grounds unless otherwise noted.
