SCRAPPERS Young falters in debut on hill

Trying to rebound from shoulder surgery, pitcher Simon Young struggled as the Scrappers lost 5-1.
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. -- Simon Young's first start of the season didn't go exactly as planned.
The left-handed pitcher, trying to work his way back from shoulder surgery, allowed four runs in four innings Sunday as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers lost 5-1 to the Jamestown Jammers at Diethrick Park.
The Jammers scored four unearned runs against Scrappers pitching, including three against Young.
Just two seasons ago, Young was 7-2 for the Scrappers with a New York-Penn League-best 1.75 ERA. But he didn't have that same sort of result Sunday against the Jammers.
Jamestown (11-9) took advantage of two Scrappers errors to build a 4-0 lead after three innings.
Young allowed six hits while striking out three and walking three.
Held to 3 hits
Four Jamestown pitchers held the Scrappers (11-9) to three hits, including doubles by Ben Francisco and Brian Wright. Angel Abreu singled for Mahoning Valley.
Dave Johnston (1-0) earned the win with two innings of hitless relief.
Matt Blethen and Todd Culp pitched the final four innings for the Scrappers, allowing one unearned run on two hits.
Mahoning Valley and Jamestown are now tied for second place in the Pinckney Division, one game behind first-place Auburn.
Jamestown's win, however, is under protest by Scrappers manager Chris Bando, who notified umpires in the top of the ninth inning.
Bando claimed that Jamestown played with 26 players on its roster, one over the maximum. The league will decide on the matter soon.
The Scrappers complete their series at Jamestown tonight. They have Tuesday off before beginning a six-game home stand Wednesday against Vermont.
