Men's Golf Classic to tee off July 22



Longest-drive and hole-in-one contests are planned.
SALEM -- The Columbiana County American Cancer Society will sponsor its 19th annual Men's Golf Classic July 22 at Salem Hills Golf and Country Club, Route 45.
Cost of the event is $90 per person. Registration and lunch are scheduled for 11:30 a.m., and the event will begin with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. A steak dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. followed by the presentation of awards, door prizes and raffle items.
There also will be a longest-drive contest with a $200 prize, and any golfer who makes a hole-in-one will receive a two-year lease on a General Motors vehicle. Putting and chipping contests also will be held. Sponsors are Shaker Woods and Sam Ferguson and Midway Motor Sales in New Waterford.
Golf divisions
The event will be a four-player scramble. Golfers with an index of 0 to 7 play in Division 1, those with an index of 7.1 to 15.4 in Division 2 and those with an index of 15.5 or higher in Division 3.
The first-place team from each division will advance to the ACS State Championship Sept. 7-9 at Firestone Country Club, Akron. Winners of the state tournament will advance to the ACS National Championship Oct. 25 and 26 at the PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Lowell Schloneger, Columbiana mayor, is tournament chairman and Mike Mercure, honorary chairman. Serving on the committee are Gene Altomore, George Begalla, Roger Crowell, Saundra Hall, Lucille Pavlock, Dr. Len Pritchard, Pete Rademacher and Debra Shivers.
Proceeds from the tournament will be used for cancer research and for quality-of-life programs for cancer patients and their families in the tri-county area.
