HOWLAND -- Darlene St. George is once again a township official.
During a special meeting Tuesday, trustees appointed St. George township administrator. She had left her position as a Howland trustee in 2000 to become Liberty Township's administrator.
Trustee Rick Clark said St. George, who lives on Clifton Drive in the township, will earn $59,000 a year. She will also receive a $300-a-month car allowance and four weeks of vacation, trustees said.
She will replace John Emanuel, who resigned last week.
St. George was not available for comment. She attended the meeting but had to leave as soon as it was over so she could make another appointment in Liberty.
St. George will officially become the administrator April 1 but will begin training with Emanuel on March 18, Clark said.
Top choice: The trustees said they did not advertise or interview for the position because they knew St. George would be their first choice.
"After John told us that he was leaving, we met in executive session, and it was agreed that I would contact Darlene and find out if she was interested," Clark said. He added that he knew St. George would "do an outstanding job."
"I'm very pleased she accepted," Clark said.
The trustees noted, however, that they will miss Emanuel. Emanuel has been the administrator since 1994.
Leaving office: Emanuel, 64, was district manager of the Social Security Administration for Portage and Trumbull counties before taking the township job. He also served on the school board and zoning commission and as township trustee from 1984 to 1994.
During his tenure as a trustee, Howland added sidewalks to East Market Street and improved the township park, instituted a regular road paving program, bought 11 new police cars, created a senior center, and most recently, moved into a new building, paid for with $1.3 million in cash, trustees said.
