CANFIELD Gas station holdup leads to an arrest

A man watched the scene from his truck outside the store, and gave police the vehicle's license plate number.
CANFIELD -- A 33-year-old Youngstown man faces an arraignment Wednesday on two robbery charges and a parole violation after a holdup at the Marathon gas station at 4585 Boardman-Canfield Road, sheriff's department officials said.
James Stanford Jr. of Brookline Avenue on the city's North Side was arrested Sunday at St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was receiving treatment for an unrelated shooting. He has since been released and is being held in Mahoning County Justice Center, said Maj. Michael Budd.
Reported by cashier: A 43-year-old cashier at the gas station told police that she was robbed around 8:40 a.m. Thursday when a man behind the counter told her he would shoot her if she got in his way, then stole $300 from the register.
A 35-year-old man sitting in his parked truck outside the store saw a clerk hiding by a shelf inside the store and watched the robber leave the store and enter a vehicle. He gave police the vehicle's license plate number. Police discovered that the 1987 tan Pontiac 6000 had been stolen from an Ames department store parking lot in Niles.
A second man, 42, of Atkinson Avenue on Youngstown's East Side, was arrested later Thursday after a deputy found him sitting in the parked Pontiac in the Kimmel Brook housing complex on Rosewood Drive on Youngstown's East Side. He fled from the deputy and was later arrested on charges of receiving stolen property and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He told police he had picked Stanford up at the gas station and dropped him off on Lansdowne Boulevard on the East Side. He said Stanford had a large amount of money upon leaving the gas station.
Stanford was hospitalized Thursday morning after city police found him at 9:50 a.m. lying on the floor of the Forest City Food Market, 180 W. Indianola Ave. on the South Side. He had suffered a gunshot wound and staggered into the store. He would not tell police where the shooting took place. Budd said it is unrelated to the robbery.
Stanford was also arrested on an outstanding robbery warrant in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
