U.S. Route 6 across Pennsylvania's northern tier is fabled as a scenic route, but for years it has been without a printed official guide. That has changed with a new publication called "Pennsylvania Route 6: Take the High Road," a 32-page color guide that describes all 11 counties whose county seats are connected by the 400-mile stretch of highway.
Along the route can be found several U.S. "firsts": underground mine, steam train voyage, oil well, electric trolley system, lighthouse on the Great Lakes.
The guide is available at visitor centers along the route or through the Poconos tourism site at www.800poconos.com, or by calling (800) 762-6667.

Also available from the Poconos tourism office is a guide to visiting coal sites, "Black Diamonds: Experience Pennsylvania's Anthracite Mining Heritage."

Responding to the Jan. 1 introduction of the euro in Western Europe, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF has expanded its "Change for Good" program in which it collects old currency aboard international flights for donation to the U.N. group. For the next several months, you can donate unused currency to more than 100 Travelex and Thomas Cook sites in the United States.
