SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Teachers can acquire the credentials to become a principal or assistant principal in a new certification program at Slippery Rock University.
"We've been preparing teachers for 113 years; we've been preparing counselors; now we can finally prepare principals," said Dr. Jay Hertzog, SRU's education dean.
The certification program will start this fall with about 15 students. To be admitted, candidates must have a master's degree in education or related field and have worked as a teacher for at least three years.
Tutoring sessions aimedat special-needs kids
YOUNGSTOWN -- Children between the ages of 7 and 14 who have been diagnosed with learning disabilities can enroll in an assessment and tutoring program at Youngstown State University. The program will run from July 12 to Aug. 9.

Girard teen chosenfor leadership forum
GIRARD -- Clark Cretella Jr. has been chosen to attend the 2002 National Youth Leadership Forum on Defense, Intelligence and Diplomacy from Jan. 29 to Feb. 3 in Washington, D.C. The Girard High School junior is the son of Clark Sr. and Denise Cretella of Forsythe Ave. The forum is for students interested in its subjects. He has shown an interest in attending the Naval Academy.
Students invitedto college fair
YOUNGSTOWN -- High school students throughout the Mahoning and Shenango valleys are invited to a college fair 8 a.m. to noon Feb. 9 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 707 Arlington St. The event is open to students in grades nine to 12 and their parents.
