If reassessments stand, Sharon will lose $22,000 in tax revenue

SHARON, Pa. -- The city is facing the loss of more than $22,000 in real estate tax revenue if a list of 30 proposed property value reassessments in Sharon isn't successfully challenged in court.
Nearly every property on the list is a commercial property, and city council voted Thursday to appeal the reassessments in Mercer County Common Pleas Court.
Council didn't know at the time just how much revenue might be lost but Marie Reiter, city clerk, did some tabulating Friday and said $22,398 is the potential loss.
The reassessments were approved by the Mercer County Board of Assessment Appeal, and the city was notified of the changes earlier this month. Some cut assessments by as much as 30 and 45 percent.
Sharon has the right to appeal those changes and authorized Atty. William Madden, city solicitor, to begin that process.
Challenging the reassessments doesn't mean they will automatically be reversed. The city has to prove the properties aren't entitled to the decreases they received.
Council wants to talk with county tax assessment representatives and the county commissioners, who are the Board of Assessment Appeal, to find out how the new figures were determined.
