CITY SERIES Wilson's rally produces victory

The Redmen went on a 13-0 run in the final minutes to pull out the win.

YOUNGSTOWN -- With 3 minutes, 48 seconds remaining in Friday's City Series boys basketball game, Rayen led host Wilson 50-46.
The Tigers didn't score again.
Wilson finished with a 13-0 run to post a 59-50 victory and a season sweep over Rayen (2-9, 0-3).
"Everybody pulled together defensively with the game on the line." said Wilson's Demar Clark, who scored 11 points and added 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Clark's steal and layup closed the gap to 50-48, and Antwaun Johnson added two steals and three free throws to put Wilson (6-7, 3-2) on top for good, 51-50.
"We had good momentum, but too many mistakes and bad decisions at a crucial part of the game took the wind out of our sails" said Rayen coach Phillip House.
Redmen led early: Wilson jumped out to a 6-0 lead and led 17-11 after a quarter. The Redmen led 31-24 at halftime before the Tigers rallied.
By the time the third quarter ended, Rayen had tied the game at 41.
Anthony Jones gave Rayen its first lead, 46-44, with 6:01 left, but the Tigers committed six of their 22 turnovers down the stretch.
Wilson played without top scorer Ellis Moody.
"We needed people to step up and quite a few did," Wilson coach Mark Cherol said. "We really played as a team tonight."
Other scorers: Johnson scored 15 points and added 11 rebounds and four steals. Isaiah Anderson scored 12 and Randall Poindexter and Demar Clark each added 11.
"We were short people and had to come up big in the clutch," said Poindexter, who grabbed 13 of Wilson's 35 rebounds.
The Redmen also had 22 turnovers, but shot 24 of 42 from the floor and hit 10 free throws to Rayen's two.
Junior guard Jamal Higgs had a trio of 3 pointers and led Rayen with 15 points. Senior Anthony Jones scored 12 points -- all in the second half.
