LISBON Court date set in kidnapping and rape case

Each offense carries a maximum 10-year jail sentence.
LISBON -- A Salineville man was in Columbiana County Jail this morning on $500,000 cash bond in connection with the weekend kidnapping and rape of a teen-ager.
Douglas Davis, 31, of 34688 Walnut Ridge, made an initial court appearance Wednesday before Judge Robert Roberts at Columbiana County Southwest Municipal Court.
Village police charged Davis with rape and kidnapping, both first-degree felonies. Each bears a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
Judge Roberts set a preliminary hearing for 3 p.m. Friday at Southwest Municipal Court. The hearing will be overseen by municipal court Judge Mark Frost.
Davis indicated during Wednesday's hearing that he would be hiring his own attorney and would not need a public defender.
Alleged crime: Police say that Davis abducted a 16-year-old Salineville girl at gunpoint about 1 p.m. Sunday.
The abduction occurred either in front of or in a coin-operated laundry in the 100 block of East Main Street.
The gunman had the girl get into his car and took her to a secluded spot inside the village limits, where he raped and struck her, police said.
Investigators were led to Davis by a description provided by the girl. She also told them she saw a prescription medication bottle in his car with his name on it, police said.
Davis was questioned, arrested and jailed Sunday evening.
Police Chief Michael Abraham said the attack was random. He did not know the girl, Abraham said.
