Greenville water disrupted in break
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- "It looked like a river," said Maria Kerekes, office manager for the Greenville Municipal Authority, describing a major waterline break on Clinton Street.
The 12-inch line ruptured in front of the authority's office at 44 Clinton St. around 8:40 a.m. Tuesday, and it took work crews about 50 minutes to find the break and shut off the water, she said.
Clinton is a brick street, and the force of the rising water caused the bricks to roll over in place on the street, Kerekes said.
The break disrupted water service to the entire eastern side of the borough, and the Greenville schools were shut down early when it became clear service wouldn't be restored quickly.
The cause of the break wasn't immediately known, but Kerekes said it could have been the result of the recent freeze and thaw weather cycle.
No damage estimate was available.
Kerekes said work crews had removed the damaged section of line by 3 p.m. and service was restored by early evening.
